Underwriting Specialist, Engineering Property

Based downtown Toronto
An individual contributor responsible for business development and the comprehensive management of a highly complex Property book, including Equipment Breakdown. Recognized by brokers as a Large-Risk Managed Property underwriter and a technical expert in Property underwriting. Operating under general management direction, this role works within broad authority on assignments characterized by high technical complexity and careful coordination. May have regional, industry segment or company-wide scope.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
• Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines.
• Works on highly complex underwriting risks employing systematic analysis to assess acceptability of risks.
• Determines appropriate pricing of complex risks for assigned book of business based on financial and competitive analysis in line with compliance requirements and with little oversight needed from superiors.
• Contributes to the department’s strategies.
• Analyzes quality, quantity, and profitability of highly complex risks underwritten; prepares and presents reports to management.
• Analyses and accepts various Insurer policy wordings and also manuscript wordings. As necessary develops policy language and or specialized endorsement and for Property programs.
- Markets products and services through the brokerage community and makes field visits.
• Develops and maintains broker relationships to reach positive and profitable outcomes on complex, high-risk business.
• Keeps current on provincial/territory issues and regulations, industry activity and trends. May participate in industry trade groups.
• Mentors and guides less experienced underwriters and assists in the development of underwriting training.
• Utilizes advanced functionality in relevant company systems to perform day-to-day activities.
• Contributes to underwriting projects and presentations.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
• Advanced technical expertise, underwriting skill and high level of knowledge of insurance and underwriting principles, practices and procedures. - Experience underwriting industrial, manufacturing, infrastructure, power & utility and mining accounts is an asset.
• Advanced natural catastrophe underwriting skills. - Regularly scrutinized Risk & Underwriting Reports and applies findings to fundamental underwriting decisions i.e., line setting, in-class assessments, risk profiles, value of the deal.
- Strong communication, negotiation and presentation skills. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of the company's internal and external business partners.
• Advanced analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple accounts.
• Ability to work both independently and within a team environment, while also being supportive of the company performance culture.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.
• Demonstrated leadership skills.
