Manager,  Small Group Underwriting 

Based in Toronto - 2 days in office 

 

OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES


Lead the team of Small Group Underwriters, establishing and executing plans that enable the team and department to achieve its key objectives and deliverables, including achieving its operational and customer service standards.  Responsibilities include:

  • Direct the Group Underwriters’ team priorities and workload to ensure achievement of the department’s objectives, targets and standards.
  • Lead the development and implementation of enhancements to department’s policies and procedures that improve profitability, productivity, quality, and customer service.
  • Provide effective and proactive leadership to support and enhance the performance of the Small Group Underwriting team.
  • Mentor, coach and facilitate professional development for the Small Group Underwriters.
  • Actively contribute to developing and delivering strategic initiatives to doing things differently; and obtaining efficiency via embracing and implementing change.
  • Build relationships with other enterprise divisions (ex. Pharmacy, Mental Health, Pricing) to contribute to the success of the department and company. 
  • Embrace the organizations Mission and Values.
     

Client & Product Support:

  • Maintain strong partnerships with management and business development teams and company clients/key accounts.
  • Assist with the preparation of proposals/renewals and monitor progress.
  • Represent the group Underwriting in discussions with both internal and external stakeholders to ensure that performance standards and objectives are defined and achieved.

Required Qualifications:

  • A results-oriented and highly credible individual with at least 3 years of leadership experience and at least 5 years of underwriting experience in the Health and Dental area.
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma; degree being in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, or another discipline relevant to the position preferred.
  • Demonstrates an aptitude for detail and is results focused, while having the ability to see the big picture and how tasks fit into accomplishing overall company objectives.
  • Innovative thinker and problem solver; strong business acumen and judgment.
  • Highly developed planning, organizing and negotiation skills; can manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines and respond to changing priorities.
  • Leadership experience; the ability to motivate, influence and coach others.
  • Ability to ‘roll up the sleeves’ and get involved at a detailed level in order to ensure timely and accurate delivery of results.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication/presentation skills; confident, credible and personable.
  • Professional with a strong and responsive service orientation.
  • Superb interpersonal skills including the ability to build positive and productive relationships with diverse groups of people; thrives in a collaborative and challenging team environment.
  • Embodies the values of the company.
  • Strong personal integrity and work ethic; takes responsibility; is accountable for results.
